Madambakkam is known for its historic Shiva Temple of Lord Thenupuriswarar, believed to be constrcuted during the tenure of kulothunga Chola.

As of 2001 India census[2], Madambakkam had a population of 16,556. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Madambakkam has an average literacy rate of 82%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 85%, and female literacy is 78%. In Madambakkam, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.
