[edit] Route to the final
Liverpool's journey to the final had been notable in that they won every single one of the away legs of their ties, including a 4-1 drubbing of Benfica at Estadio da Luz in Lisbon in the quarter-final.
Roma had a scare in their semi-final first-leg when they were beaten 2-0 away by Dundee United of Scotland. However they won the second-leg 3-0 and went through to the final, which was being played at their home stadium.
[edit] The game
Despite Liverpool's fearsome reputation in Europe, many felt that Roma were the favourites to win the game, given the fact that it was being played at their home stadium in front of nearly 60,000 of their own supporters.
Liverpool took a surprise lead early in the first half when a cross by Craig Johnston was met in the air by Ronnie Whelan. Whelan and Roma keeper Tancredi jumped together to reach the ball which was headed back across goal by Whelan, while Tancredi fell to the ground. Liverpool defender Phil Neal knocked the loose ball into the goal from close range. Roma players protested to the referee that Whelan had fouled the Roma keeper when jumping for the header, but the goal was allowed to stand.
Roma equalized just before half-time when a cross from Bruno Conti was headed over Liverpool keeper Bruce Grobbelaar by Roberto Pruzzo.
The match eventually went into extra-time and, with no more goals scored, penalties.
[edit] Penalty shoot-out
Steve Nicol, who'd only recently become a first-team regular for Liverpool, took their first penalty but skied the ball over the cross-bar. Roma converted their first penalty, as did Liverpool their second, before Roma's Bruno Conti sent his penalty over the cross-bar as well.
Both teams continued scoring until Roma's fourth penalty. In a now-infamous goalkeeping moment, as Roma player Francesco Graziani placed the ball down and prepared to take his penalty, Liverpool keeper Bruce Grobbelaar feigned terror along the goal-line by wobbling his legs in an attempt to unsettle him. His ploy was successful as Graziani sent the ball over the bar, and Alan Kennedy scored Liverpool's final penalty to give them their fourth European Cup triumph.
