The 1985 European Cup Final was played between Liverpool FC of England and Juventus FC of Italy at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, Belgium on May 29th, 1985.
The match however was largely irrelevant as it was overshadowed by the disaster which took place about an hour before kick off, when Liverpool supporters charged at Juventus supporters, causing a huge crush of people against a stadium wall which subsequently collapsed. 39 people were killed and hundreds injured.
It was decided that the match should be played, as it was felt that abandoning it could cause further trouble.
[edit] The match
On 56 minutes, Juventus player Zbigniew Boniek split the Liverpool defence with a surging run towards goal from the half-way line. Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie tracked back behind him but caught his heels on the run-in to the penalty area. Although TV replays showed that the foul actually occurred just outside the area, the referee awarded a spot-kick to Juventus and Michel Platini subsequently scored what was to be the only goal of the game.
The only other incident of note occurred later in the second-half when Liverpool player Ronnie Whelan appeared to be brought down inside the Juventus penalty area. The referee didn't award a penalty kick however, and Juventus went on to win their first European Cup.
