Bill Machrone is a technologist, writer and editor, with interests in computers, microprocessors, microcontrollers, music, audio, amplifier design and modification, home theater and video, automotive technology, woodworking, guitarmaking, and machining/metalworking.
Machrone is the former editor-in-chief of PC Magazine and cofounder of ExtremeTech.com. PC Magazine underwent its most explosive growth and widest readership during his tenure as editor. He founded PC Labs and instituted the benchmark tests that made the magazine so popular. He has launched numerous computer magazines and Web sites, including PCMagNet, which eventually became ZDNet. He writes technology-oriented white papers, articles, and special sections for computer manufacturers, technology companies, publications such as Wired, the Wall Street Journal, PC Magazine, The Perfect Vision, and many others. During his tenure at Ziff Davis Publishing, he held positions as Vice President, Technology and Vice President, Interactive Media. He also designed and launched Ziff-Davis Labs, a world-class corporate testing facility.
He is the author of a number of highly regarded modifications to popular Fender amplifiers and is respected as an authority on tube amplifiers. Machrone built his first tube circuit when he was about 8, taking the lead from his father, who was an inventor, TV repairman, and tool and diemaker.
