Bold text THIS BARREN LAND MY BED OF ROSES BY AYANA NOBLE, B.A., 2005
Local Author Writer Poet Dramatist and Publisher a Winner!
When asked if she ever felt like tossing the towel in, local Author & Writer, Ayana Noble (the pen-name of former Australia's Most Wanted, Wrongly Convicted & Longest Serving Female Prisoner, Karen Tonkin) the flicker of life in her eye dies as if she has been deeply wounded and bears the weight of long-suffering. She smiles, that radiant magnet of a smile that says, 'I'm OK. I passed the test!' For a moment, I reflect upon her suffering.
Winner of Bauhinia Literary Awards 2004 and successful Author, Poet, and Playright Ms Noble's work is highly awarded, having received two awards - The Deans Letter of Commendation for Outstanding Performance, in 2004. Now, in the final year of a Master of Letters program and with som good ammo under her belt, Ms Noble is working on two projects - the series of events that lead to her wrongful conviction and imprisonment and Script-Writing.
'Life has brightened up since I had DNA testing! It wasn't available back then. We all make mistakes. The thing is, to rectify them when and where we can. I have worked long and hard, suffered great adversity and sacrificed all manner of things just to prove a point, that is, I didnot do it. The reality is, however, that although I was born with a pen in my hand, the cruel irony is, if I had not been wrongly convicted I may never have develeoped and emerged as a Writer.'
I agree, 'You have performed some amazing tasks. You took your poetry book, 'This Barren Land My Bed of Roses' right through the entire publishing process single-handedly. You took it from scraps of paper and raw experience through the entire editing and publishing process - to the end?'
'Yes.' She laughs. 'I'm really quite capable...'
'So I see. We can expect your next book out around Christmas/ Is that right?'

"Ayana, Thank you ..."
"Thank you."
It's hard to believe I have just spoken with a woman who has not only suffered extremely at the hands of others, but who has lived to tell the story. I know she will succeed in anything she turns her hand to - the clouds have broken.
I was encouraged greatly by this webshot article I found last night. If only there were more like you Ayna! (R.Bell Sarina)
[edit] Photos added, please add captions
I've added some photos of Mackay as seen from a helecopter en route to the Whitsundays. I have absolutely no idea what I was looking at, and I only know it was Mackay because that's what it said on my ticket, and at the airport as I passed through. So, if you know what any of the photos are showing, I encourage you to please add a caption describing it, because I honestly have no idea! -- All the best, Nickj (t) 05:19, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
I've added captions. As a long time local I've got no problem identifying the locations! Sequential photos where it's obvious the same subject is being show have just been captioned once. Pretty good photos by the by. Bilious 03:16, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] James Starr?
I've removed the wikification referring to James Starr. I can't find any suggestion that Texan comissioners were re-allocating plots in frontier Australia anywhere else, so I've removed the wiki-reference. My guess is that ours is not the same James Starr.
[edit] Article quality
Am I the only one who thinks this reads more like a tourism brochure than an encyclopedia entry? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.109.29.53 (talk) 05:17, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
