[edit] General

It was opened in 1980 by then Governor General Sir David Beattie. The first principal was Colin Prentice, followed by his executive Allan Macdonald. The current principal is Byron Bentley.

[edit] Whanau (Family) System

Macleans was the first public school in New Zealand to use the Whanau House System - dividing the school up into 'houses' of about 300 students each, with two classes of 30 or so students for each year level. The eight whanau houses are named after famous New Zealanders: Batten, Mansfield, Rutherford, Hillary, Kupe, Te Kanawa, Upham and Snell. The oldest house is Hillary, although it was rebuilt after it burnt down. More houses have been added as the roll has increased, with the latest addition being Upham, which was opened in 2003. It has a strength of 2,500 students.

[edit] International Students

Macleans College offers many opportunities to fee paying foreign students. As they pay more than NZ$13,000 each per year, they constitute a significant part of the school's income.[citation needed]

[edit] Sport

The Macleans College is renowned for its attention to football, rugby and basketball.

The Premier Basketball boys is currently coached by Andrew Lenton. They compete in a Counties Manukau League. 2006 saw them achieve higher success as they reached the greater Auckland competition.

The 1st XI boys won Auckland's second division school league in 2005, which was an achievement that has not been savoured for 13 years. The 1st XI Boys team is now competing in the Auckland Premier Division, the highest ranked college football league in the country. The team finished 3rd in the 2007 competition.

The Macleans 1st XV Rugby squad is currently competing in the Auckland B division and has high aims to once again be promoted to the A division which is commonly regarded as one of the Worlds most competitive rugby competitions.
