Machir (tribal group)

Machir was an Israelite group mentioned in the Song of Deborah. An eponymous Machir is mentioned in the biblical genealogies as the son of Manasseh[1], presumably implying that the Machir tribal group was part of the tribe of Manasseh, and since the individual named Machir is mentioned as having conquered and also settled on the eastern side of the Jordan River, the Machir tribal group presumably refers to the half tribe of Manasseh which resided on this side of the Jordan. In the Song of Deborah, the response of Machir to the battle with Sisera is contrasted with that of other Isrealites residing in Gilead -the name used for Israelite land east of the Jordan.
