Machingal is a common family name in Kerala which is a southern state of India. Machingal family members are in general nairs. however there are many subdivisions of Hindu religion carrying this title in and around Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala. It is also noted that few Muslim family has the same name. It is believed that the nairs belonging to this family were erstwhile "Padanairs" (warriors of kochi kingdom).
Some christian families are also having this name. They are mainly from their paternal family of Pulikkottil. This name was given to them by the namboothiris of the perumpully mana because they are the only family in their village called Kattakampal (Thalapilly thaluk in Trichur) withm a strong room (with a single door and no windows and panelled by wood) called "machu" in the house. machu
