[edit] History

Originally known as Maccabi Acre (Hebrew: מכבי עכו‎, Maccabi Akko), the club played for several years in the lower leagues and was in the shadow of the more successful side of Hapoel Acre.

In the late 1980s Maccabi Acre began to move up the ranks to the then second tier, Liga Artzit, bypassing Hapoel Acre and consequently being the major club of Acre.

In the year 2000, chairman Bruch Ofir decided to move the team from Acre to Kiryat Ata and the team was renamed from Maccabi Acre to Maccabi Ironi Kiryat Ata, as a result of continuous disrespect from the municipality towards his team. For the people of Kiryat Ata it was a new chance of getting a new football team in their town, after a few years back saw Hapoel Kiryat Ata fall apart.

In the first year of it existence Maccabi played in Liga Leumit, though the team failed to survive and got relegated to the Liga Artzit (now the third tier).

In the year 2005, the club finished second bottom of Liga Artzit, and should have been relegated to Liga Alef, the fourth tier. However, fellow Liga Artzit club Maccabi Ramat Amidar merged with Liga Leumit side Hakoah Ramat Gan, leaving one free place in the league, so the club were reprieved.
