It is located on the Main South Line and is served by CityRail trains of the Airport and East Hills lines of the CityRail network. [1]. It is a terminus for electric trains. Diesel trains on the Southern Highlands line also stop here.

[edit] History
Under the Liverpool - Campbelltown electrification, completed in 1968, electrification was extended to the Glenlee coal siding and loader (now in Mount Annan) through the site of Macarthur station, so that electrically hauled coal trains could connect it and Port Kembla. The station was opened in 1985,[2] when two platforms and two crossovers were provided. Because trains terminating on the main lines caused congestion to through trains, an additional platform was added in time for the 2000 Summer Olympics. Glenlee coal loader has closed and electrification has been cut back to Macarthur.

[edit] Facilities
Under the CityRail Clearways Project, Macarthur is to receive a fourth platform, with the platforms arranged so that terminating trains generally use the middle two platforms, while through trains use the outer two platforms. There will also be a direct connection from Macarthur to the stabling sidings at Campbelltown.
The station is equipped with ramps, connecting the concourse with the platforms, however since the ramps were built, the standards for ramps have been tightened, requiring a less steep slope to qualify for Easy Access for wheelchairs.
