Mac Van Valkenburg

Mac Elwyn Van Valkenburg (b. October 5, 1921, Utah - d. Orem, Utah, March 19, 1997) was an electrical engineer ("EE").

He graduated from the University of Utah in 1943 with a Bachelors degree in "EE", received a Masters degree in "EE" from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1946, and a PhD in "EE" from Stanford University in 1952.

Van Valkenburg was a professor at the University of Illinois from 1955-1966, then joining Princeton University as professor and head of electrical engineering until 1974. He then return to UIUC. Named to the W. W. Grainger Professorship endowed chair in 1982, and became Dean of the College of Engineering in 1984.

Van Valkenburg was author of seven textbooks and numerous scientific publications.

The IEEE Education Society offers an annual Mac Van Valkenburg Early Career Teaching Award. UIUC established the M. E. Van Valkenburg Graduate Research Award in 1990.

  • The Lamme Medal, the highest honor of the American Society for Engineering Education
  • The Westinghouse Award
  • The IEEE Education Medal
  • Halliburton Engineering Education Leadership Award of the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois.
