MacTheRipper is a Mac OS X application that enables users to extract DVD content for backup purposes. The current public release version is 2.6.6. The longstanding lack of an OS X equivalent to DVDShrink gave the standalone freeware ripper widespread popularity among Macintosh users.
Development releases of MTR3 (MacThe Ripper version 3) are available to those who have given a donation to the author during the Beta phase. The current donation rate in order to get a copy of the software from the developer is US$40.00.
MTR3 will be distributed freely pending development completion. It should be noted, however, that MTR3 has been in Beta phase since April 30th 2006 [1], leading some to speculate that the developer's intentions are to keep it in Beta phase indefinitely, as this allows him to collect fees without having to call his software shareware. MacTheRipper was developed in 2002 and since then the program has over 2 million users.[citation needed]
