[edit] Questions to answer:
- Did Atkins' presumably rich parents mean that she didn't need to work and could devote her time to painting, or was painting/illustrating her occuption?
- Which tea company did Mr. Atkins work for / own?
- Was her sister more 'famous'?
- Which other works of art are out there?
- Is "The antediluvians" a book and if so who published it?
- Does anyone know which "Sweet William Cottage" the painting may be of. Perhaps this one? Assuming it's a real place.
- I can't find any evidence that Margaret Alison Atkins ever married. Can anyone else?
- Are there are direct descendents of the Atkin's still alive?
- There's a "Francisca M A Bollaert" that married in St Geo Han Sq in 1868. Could that be her grandmother. It's the right kind of location and also her sister could have been named after her grandmother.
- The 1901 census lists her as being an "Art Student". Which college did she attend?
[edit] Other family members
There is an artist from the same period called Mary Elizabeth Atkins (fl.1897-1940) who painted "Pansy and the Fairies". As the subject matter and time periods are quite similar, is is possible it's a relative? There was a "Mary Elizabeth Atkins" born around Marylebone in 1851 which could be the same woman (see Free BMD).
There is also a painting of some "HYDRANGEAS" here. [1].
[edit] Potential Research
It may be worth searching through online copies of The New Age ("A weekly review of politics, literature, and art") an online copy of a journal published around the early 1900s. [Search the MJP]. "The New Age was a weekly magazine, printed in double columns, folio sized, and mostly in type sizes that varied from small to miniscule. A rather different journal had been appearing under that name, when a group led by G. B. Shaw decided to provide some funding and asked A. R. Orage and his friend Holbrook Jackson to begin a "New Series" in the spring of 1907. From then on, volumes ran for six months, with pages numbered accordingly. (The magazine continued after Orage resigned, but is not of comparable interest)."
[edit] Homes
The 1901 census shows her residence as St Mildred [2], London. I'm not quite sure why.
[edit] Arthur Nias Atkins
The 1905 edition of "Kelly's Post Office Directory" shows: Atkins & Mordaunt, wholesale tea dealers, 17 Water Lane, Gt. Tower Street. EC
I presume this is Arthur's company as it's roughly around the same area. Who is Mordaunt?
Does the company appear in any later editions of Kelly's?
Notes:
- 1794: 'Directory of London and Westminster,& Borough of Southwark.' - "Chumley Wm. Cooper, 17, Water lane, Tower street"
- 1851: 'London Post Office Directory' - "Howell & Hale, wine & spirit merchants, sole consignees of jersey brandy & distillers, 17 Water lane, Tower street"
- 1905 'Kelly's Post Office Directory' - "Atkins & Mordaunt, wholesale tea dealers, 17 Water Lane, Gt. Tower Street. EC"
