M-74 (Michigan highway)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

M-74 was the designation of a state trunkline route in the U.S. state of Michigan. In 1920, M-74 connected at both ends to M-14 (most of which later became US 127, although at this time the route veered to the west of Houghton Lake to end south of Kalkaska). M-74 started at M-14 north of Harrison in Clare County and followed what are now county roads through Leota, Moddersville and Butterfield to rejoin M-14 in Merritt.

In 1923, M-14 was re-routed around the eastern side of Houghton Lake and Higgins Lake. A portion of the former route of M-14 from Merritt through Moorestown and Pioneer are redesignated as M-74.

In 1925, the portion of M-74 south of Moddersville is returned to local control. The resulting spur from Merritt south to Moddersvill was returned to local control in 1938 and the M-74 was removed entirely in 1939.
