[edit] Route description
M-34 begins at an intersection with M-99 just west of Osseo. M-99 approaches Osseo from the west along Hudson Rd and where M-99 turns south along Pioneer Rd, M-34 continues east along Hudson Rd. After Osseo, the route continues southeast towards Pittsford. After Pittsford, the route turns east and intersects U.S. Route 127 at the Hillsdale/Lenawee county line near Hudson. The road continues eastward through the city of Hudson and passes just south of Clayton where it has a junction with M-156, a short connector route south into Ohio and US 20.
Approximately four miles east of that junction, the road turns north for about two miles before turning east towards Adrian. On the southwest side of Adrian, M-34 crossed US 223. It continues east to terminate at the intersection of Beecher and Main Streets (M-52 / BUS US 223).
[edit] History
The initial incarnation of M-34 had its western terminus at US 12 in Jonesville along the present day alignment of M-99. Its eastern terminus continued through Adrian on present day US 223 through Blissfield, where it terminated at the Ohio state line near Sylvania, Ohio. In 1924, the western terminus of the highway was extended to Homer where it terminated at M-60 (Michigan highway). Just a few years later, in 1926, the western terminus was extended, yet again, to end at US 12 (present day I-94) in Albion. At the same time, the eastern segment of M-34 from Adrian to the border was assumed into the US 127 corridor, therefore, scaling the terminus back to US 127 (present day US 223).
In 1928, all of M-34 from Hillsdale to Albion is redesignated as an extension to M-64 (which would later become present day M-99. In 1954, a new US 223 bypass is built around Adrian, this results in the scaling back of M-34 to end Business US 223 and M-52. Finally, in 1966, when the M-99 highway is designated, the western terminus of M-34 is scaled back to end at the new highway near Osseo.[1]
In 2003, the short connector between M-34 and US 223 was abandoned and obliterated. Industrial Drive, a new connector between the two highways, was assumed into the state trunkline system.
