M-33 is a highway in the U.S. state of Michigan that runs from Alger in Arenac County north to Cheboygan at the tip of the "mitten" of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Between Rose City and Mio, M-33 travels through part of the Huron National Forest.
The portion between Onaway and Cheboygan was the former route of US 23 until 1940 when it was realigned onto a segment that runs along Lake Huron.

[edit] Route description
M-33 starts at exit 202 on I-75 near Alger. From there it runs north parallel to the Rifle River to an intersection with M-55 east of West Branch. South of Mio, M-33 passes Mack Lake Park in southern Oscoda County. At Mio, M-33 joins M-72 running north together before a 90–degree turn east to Fairview. M-33 turns north at Fairview, leaving the M-72 concurrency for Montmorency County. Before reaching M-68 (Michigan highway), M-33 crosses the Thunder Bay River. North of Atlanta, M-33 provides access to the Clear Lake State Park in northern Montmorency County.
M-33 parallels the Cheboygan/Presque Isle county line leading northward to Onaway. Once entering Onaway, M-33 turns west with M-68 to Afton in Cheboygan County. There M-33 turns north one last time, running along the east short of Mullett Lake past Aloha and M-212, the shortest highway in Michigan providing access to Aloha State Park. North of Aloha, M-33 meets M-27 and its northern terminus south of Cheboygan.[2]
[edit] History
M-33 was first designated in 1920. It ran along the current rounting from Mio north to M-32 east of Atlanta. It ran south from Mio to M-76 east of Roscommon. It used portions of what are now M-72 and M-144. The southern portion would be moved by 1928 through Rose City to M-55 east of West Branch. The northern terminus would be moved in 1934 to Onaway. M-33 was extended along M-32 to Atlanta and north to end at US 23 (now M-68. US 23 was realigned to a lakeshore routing along Lake Huron. M-33 was extended along the former US 23 to Cheboygan to end at US 27 in 1940. The southern terminus was moved south from near West Branch to Alger along M-76 in 1944. This terminus would be moved one last time in 1968 when M-76 is moved to a new freeway that would later become I-75 in 1973.[1]
