Mårten Hagström is the rhythm guitarist for the Swedish Technical/Thrash metal band Meshuggah. He joined the band after the release of their first album, which allowed Jens Kidman to focus on his vocal performances. He is known for his strong and complex rhythm guitar playing. Marten has cites, Rush, James Hetfield, Squarepusher, Strapping Young Lad, Candlemass, and Geezum as influences.

In a Metal Injection interview he has said, "You can't play an instrument for the technicality of it. It's a tool you use it to get what's in here and here (points to heart and head) out there." He's also said when he was growing up everybody in Sweden was trying to be a guitar virtuoso which made him want to be solely a rhythm guitarist.

Although fellow Meshuggah guitarist Fredrik Thordendal plays all of the leads and solos and writes more of Meshuggah's songs, Mårten entirely wrote a jazz-influenced instrumental, Acrid Placidity on the album Destroy Erase Improve, showing his melodicism within the band. Marten has also stepped out of his role of only playing rhythm guitar as of the release of Meshuggah's obzen album by playing the more slow, melodic leads on the songs that he wrote on songs such as Electric Red and Pravus, as many people have seen him doing live.

Hagström and Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake have been playing together ever since 6th grade in school. Both Hagström and Meshuggah lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal use custom-made Nevborn and Ibanez eight-string guitars.

It is also interesting to note that he bears a strong resemblance to metalocalypse character Toki Wartooth.
