This is a valid German spelling. The ¨ can be replaced by the letter "e" after the umlauted letter when the umlaut isn't used. ie ä = ae, ö = oe, ü = ue.

Does anyone have a good source for that? All I could find are second-hand sources like AskMen or the IMDB, which are notoriously error-prone. Is there a first-hand source? Mad Jack 23:58, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

In an interview by Rick Dees (www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-O38-nmNao) Mädchen states that both her parents are German and that she was given the name beacause it means "pretty, young maiden". It does, however, just mean "girl". The German pronunciation is nearer "med-khyen".

The German word is pronounced "med-chen" with "ch" as a voiceless palatal fricative like in "ich". The "d" is spoken in all german dialects I know. The pronounciation "MAY-chen" in the article can only belong to a special pronounciation of this specific english/american first name. • she is NEVER credited using the umlaut.

The opening credits of Twin Peaks, Fire Walk With Me spell her name Mädchen.
