Mario João (born Barreiro, 6 June 1935) was a Portuguese footballer. He played as a right-defender for SL Benfica and CUF, one of the two Barreiro teams. He was part of their European Cup victories in 1961 and 1962. He had 3 caps for Portugal National Team, two of them as a Benfica player, from 2 May 1960, in a 1-5 defeat with Yugoslavia, for European Championship quarter-finals, to the 2-1 win over Belgium, in 3 May 1964, in a friendly match. He was never a full professional and had to leave football, because he earned more money as a worker for CUF then as a football player.
