[edit] History

In the days of Russian Empire, the territory of today's Lyskovo district was mostly within the Makariev Uyezd of Nizhny Novgorod Guberniya. The official center of the uyezd was in the town of Makariev (today's urban-type settlement of Makarievo) on the northern bank of the Volga, next to the ancient Makariev Monastery. Until the fire of 1816, Makariev was the home to the annual Makariev Fair.

However, the administrative offices of the uyezd were located in the village of Lyskovo, which, being located on the southern bank of the Volga, was conveniently served by the Kazan Post Road.

In 1925, a few years after the Bolshevik Revolution, the old Makaryev Uyezd was reorganized into the Lyskovo District.

[edit] Economy

Lyskovo brewery and vegetable canning plant are well known in the region.
