Luwero District
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Luwero (sometimes spelled phonetically as Luweero) is a district in central Uganda. Like other Ugandan districts, it is named after its main municipal centre, Luwero Town. Luwero was the site of a fierce insurgency by the rebel National Resistance Army and a brutal counter-insurgency by the government of Milton Obote, known as the Luwero war or the "Bush War", that left many thousands of civilians dead during the early to mid 1980s. The area affected by the war has come to be known as the Luwero triangle.
Luwero has a population of 474,000 (2002 population census). 85% of livelihoods in agriculture. Livestock is common in northern areas. Subsistence agriculture and commercial horticultural is undertaken in the southern areas, including bee farming, rice and vanilla production.[citation needed]
The three town councils in Luwero District are Bombo, Luwero Town and Wobulenzi.
