Lutjebroek
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lutjebroek is a village in the Netherlands in the community Stede Broec. It has a population of just over 2000 people.
In colloquial Dutch, Lutjebroek has become synonymous for "any insignificant speck on the map". This is probably due to the comical sound of the name, as broek is Dutch for "pants"). Also, the Dutch word luttel is akin to the English word "little". However in the early days Broek stood for swamp. So Lutjebroek means "small swamp", because the village is placed near Grootebroek (Groote is Dutch for large). Before these places were settled there where two swamps, a minor and a large one. So the village Lutjebroek is in reality named for the place where it is located.
