Luther Welsh Jr. (Luke) is a mathematician and computer scientist. In 1988 he and Walter Colquit proved that 2110503 − 1 is prime. It is the 29th Mersenne prime, though at the time of its discovery, larger Mersenne primes were already known. This one has 33265 digits.
He was involved in setting up the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search where he helped with the Lucas-Lehmer test program, and for many years ran the mailing list for the Search.
He currently lives in California.
