Alexander III (late July, 356 BCJune 10, 323 BC), commonly known in the West as Alexander the Great or Alexander of Macedon, in Greek Μέγας Ἀλέξανδρος (Megas Alexandros), King of Macedon (336 BC-323 BC), was one of the most successful military commanders of the ancient world. Alexander is known in some Eastern traditions such as Middle Persian literature as Alexander the Cursed due to his burning of the Persian capital and national library. He is also known as Alexander Dulkarnayim (Two-horned Alexander), because an image on coins minted during his rule seemed to depict him with the two ram's horns of the Egyptian god Ammon. This perception, however, was in error, as the image on the coin is a head of Hercules crowned by a lion's head, not horns.
