Lune (poetry)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lune is a short haiku created for the English language, and consists of two forms:
[edit] The Robert Kelly lune
Because there are typically more syllables in Japanese words than there are in English words, Robert Kelly, a Professor of Literature at Bard College, invented a new form of haiku using the form 5/3/5 syllables, thereby making the form closer to the haiku than typical haikus written in the English language.
[edit] The Jack Collom lune
According to The Teachers and Writers Handbook of Poetic Forms, Jack Collom created this new form of haiku by chance. It is measured in words rather than syllables, making it easier for children to learn and compose haikus. The form is 3/5/3 words. Apparently Collom misremembered the original creation of Kelly's as this form, thereby creating a new one.
