[edit] Criticism

Lumen Christi, according to both critics and supporters, embodies a traditional model of conservative education. Range of subjects taught, professional qualifications of staff and administration, and academic rigor are all significantly less advanced/developed than several of the public high schools in the area. This is partly due to the low wages of teachers and administrators. Regarding the relatively small range of subjects taught and academic opportunities, this can largely be attributed to LC's lack of resources due to its small size and private status. Furthermore, many argue that the school lacks academic rigor and highly talented staff due to its conservative nature. Historically, catholics have been opposed to skepticism and open-mindedness, which are two of the most important hallmarks of Western education. Catholic authorities have historically discouraged (often punitively) free thought on everything from history to sexuality and reproduction. This leads, at LC, to an academic environment that is significantly less intellectually free and fruitfull than area secular schools.

Additionally, LC is relatively homogenus racially and culturally, as it is made up almost entirely of White, middle-class individuals from conservative/traditional catholic homes. Moreover, true to catholic education principles, conformism is highly valued and individualism is often discouraged (relative to secular education).

In addition to academic criticisms, many community members are critical of LC's overemphasis on athletics, and in particular football and basketball, relative to academics.

Also, again true to catholic dogma, homosexuals and those that dont fit into the traditional conception of sexuality and/or gender are generally alienated, by both students and staff. Sexual education at LC consists of dogmatic abstinence-only instruction. There is no modern sexual education at LC, leaving graduates largely to their own wits to learn about appropriate sexual behavior and contraceptive use.
