Lump hammer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A lump hammer or club hammer is a heavy one-handed hammer with a double-faced head. It is useful for light demolition work, driving masonry nails, and for use with a steel chisel when cutting stone or metal. In this last application, its weight drives the chisel more deeply into the material being cut than lighter hammers.
Weights range from 0.5kg to 3kg. A hammer weighing 1135g (2 1/2 lb) is well suited to domestic work. The head is made of high carbon cast steel and handles are normally wood, usually hickory, or synthetic resin. More expensive hammers have a steel handle with both head and handle forged as a single piece.
As debris is likely to fly, wearing safety glasses and working gloves is recommended when using a lump hammer.
