[edit] Background
Lumen Christi Catholic High School was opened in 1968 as a result of the Catholic Community of Jackson's determination to build a modern educational high school that would serve the varied educational needs of all the Catholic youth of Jackson. The project was spearheaded by the Rev. Joseph Coyle, OSFS, who also served as the first principal of the school.
This school is under the over-all direction of the Bishop of Lansing through the Diocesan Board of Education. It is supported and maintained by the nine Catholic parishes of Jackson: St. Joseph, St John's, St. Stanislaus, St. Mary's, Our Lady of Fatima, Queen of the Miraculous Medal, St. Rita, St. Catherine, and St. John's, Albion.
The total area of the school encompasses 155,000 square feet. It includes a comprehensive resource center and a library with a seating capacity of 265. The 180 foot domed gymnasium seats 3,000 people for varsity athletic and community events. The cafetorium (combined cafeteria and auditorium), with complete kitchen facilities, accommodates 500 for dining and approximately 800 for assemblies or other social functions.
[edit] Performing Arts
[edit] Band
Lumen Christi had several bands, marching band, symphony band, jazz band, and pep band. In the fall the band practices for each home football game and away playoff games. The marching band also plays in three local parades-the Jackson Christmas Parade, the Jackson Memorial Day Parade, and the Jackson County Rose Parade. At the end of football season, the band turns from a marching band into a symphony band. This band participates every other year in the MSBOA festival. On the off years, the band travels either to Disney World, as a marching band, to be in a parade or to Washington, D.C. as a symphony band to perform.
[edit] Chorale and Bella Voce
The Lumen Christi Chorale is the school choir. It is a group of about 20 students who meet each day to rehearse. They perform various concerts throughout the year. Until recently, choir was not offered as a class. Up until the 2002-2003, the choir was a club that met each Friday for one hour in the chapel. For the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 school years, choir was held as a class after school everyday until 4:00. Beginning in the 2005-2006 school year, the class was held during the regular school day. Bella Voce is the Women's Ensemble. This ensemble travels, as does the Chorale, to the annual choir festival.
At 2008 District Chorale festival the Chorale, daily Womans Ensemble, and Bella Voce received a division 1 rating for an excellent performance.
At 2008 State Choral Festival only the Chorale and Bella Voce participated and both received a division two rating for a good performance.
[edit] Drama
The drama program stages two works per year: a fall play and a spring musical. The cast practices almost daily between auditions and the day of the production. Recent productions have included "Captain Fantastic", "The Ten Little Indians", "Footloose", "Over Here", "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying", "Up the Down Staircase" and "Once Upon a Mattress".
