[edit] Career
Foster began his career as a trainee with Sheffield Wednesday. He joined Scarborough on work experience in September 2004.[1] He also had a loan spell at Alfreton Town. Whilst at Alfreton, Foster formed an impressive defensive partnership with former Lincoln City stalwart Grant Brown who alerted Lincoln to his potential whom he joined following his release from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 2005.
In his initial season at Lincoln, Foster was often used as a tough tackling holding midfield player but rarely strung a series of appearances together despite a number of impressive performances. He did, however, do enough to earn a new contract for the 2006-07 season.[2] He failed to make an impression at Sincil Bank in his second season and joined York City on a 1 month loan period on October 5, 2006.[3] This loan deal was extended for another month,[4] but was curtailed due to injury.
In January 2007, Foster was told by Lincoln that he was free to find another club and on January 12 2007, he mutually agreed to cancel his contract with Lincoln, enabling him to join Stalybridge Celtic.[5]
Foster joined Oxford United from Stalybridge on 16 February 2007.[6] He signed a new 12-month deal with Oxford on 27 June 2007.[7] He was told by Oxford manager Jim Smith to improve his lifestyle to get back into the Oxford team.[8] He was given a one match suspension following his sending off against Northwich Victoria in March 2008.[9] He finished the 2007–08 season with Oxford's Supporters Player of the Year and Players Player of the Year awards.[10]
