[edit] Criticism
Throughout her life, Sophie was the author of numerous undocumented works, including a publication of critical views on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Most notably, the treatise is known for the statement "Shelley's attempt at a ghost story is as real as it is surreal; the evocative and even romantic imagery reflects her nubile age, yet the overwhelming horror of her creation parallels the alarming advance of modern science."
This view was shared by the later Northrop Frye who wrote "[Frankenstein] is the precursor to the existential thriller".
