Luis A. Márquez

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luis Angel "Canena" Márquez Sánchez (born October 28, 1925 and died March 1, 1988, Aguadilla, Puerto Rico) was a professional baseball player. He was the third Puerto Rican to play in the major leagues (after Hiram Bithorn and Luis Rodríguez Olmo). Márquez played in a total of 68 games in the major leagues, split in two seasons between the Boston Braves, the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates. His final game was on July 11, 1954.

Márquez was involved in baseball through all his life, being at times player, coach, trainer, and even Little League coach.

The local municipal baseball stadium in Aguadilla is named for him. Should Major League Baseball approve the use of the field for winter league use, the stadium will temporarily host the Indios de Mayagüez during the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09, since Mayagüez's Isidoro García Baseball Stadium will be demolished and rebuilt in time for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.
