Luisão, real name Ânderson Luís da Silva born February 13,1981 in Amparo, São Paulo is a Brazilian footballer. He plays central defender for S.L. Benfica and the Brazilian national team.
[edit] SL Benfica
Luisão's arrival to SL Benfica was not easy: he faced a tough period of adaptation to the European football, during which he performed somewhat below his capabilities and even considered traveling back to his home country. However, Luisão has established himself as one of Benfica's top players and has been targeted by some of Europe's biggest clubs. At the end of the 2004/2005, Luisão scored a decisive goal against rivals Sporting which would give Benfica its first league title in 11 years. During the season 2006/2007 Luisão became team captain, after the injury of Nuno Gomes and Petit, proving he is a team leader and a crucial member of the squad. His voice echoes on the pitch and no one stays indifferent to his strength and leadership. After a difficult 2007/08 season at the Estadio da Luz, Luisao looks to be on his way out of SL Benfica, with a move to Portsmouth F.C. (England) his most likely destination.
[edit] National team
He has 21 caps with the Brazilian national team, the first one in July, 2001. He has scored one goal, in the Copa America 2004. He was included in manager Carlos Alberto Parreira's Brazil squad for the World Cup 2006. However, playing no part in the tournament. After Parreira's demise, who was replaced by Dunga, Luisão was one of the nine players in the World Cup 2006 squad to be called up for the team's first match after the tournament.
