Ludgate Hill station was a railway station on the London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LC&DR) in the City of London. The station was opened by the LC&DR as its City terminus on 1 June 1865 and was located on the Ludgate Viaduct between Queen Victoria Street and Ludgate Hill just a short distance north of Blackfriars station.
To the north of the station the viaduct continued to the Snow Hill tunnel which provided a connection to the recently opened Metropolitan Railway south of Farringdon enabling main line trains to run between north and south London.
Passenger services through the tunnel ended in 1916 after which year services north of Ludgate Hill station ran only the few hundred metres to Holborn Viaduct station (opened in 1874). The short distance between Holborn Viaduct and Blackfriars meant that Ludgate Hill became under utilised and the station was closed on 3 March 1929.
In the 1970s as part of the proposed Fleet Line, initial construction work was begun on Ludgate Circus a station very close to the old Ludgate Hill site. This was eventually abandoned, as the Jubilee Line was extended via different route.
The remaining station structures along with the Ludgate Viaduct and Holborn Viaduct station were demolished in 1990. Nothing remains of the station and the site is now occupied by a modern office building above a new tunnel constructed to connect the old Snow Hill tunnel and Blackfriars station for the Thameslink service. City Thameslink station is just north of the station site although it is located in the new tunnel.
