The article puts stress on the convention that the Praetorian prefecture and provincial governorship, were the two highests offices open to men of the equestrian class in the Roman Empire. It ignores however the fact that Emperor Augustus (as well as many other Emperors who succeeded him) was himself born into an equestrian, rather than a patrician, class !
