Lucille Clifton was born in Depew,New York on June 27,1936 to Samuel L. and Thelma Moore Sayles. Her father worked for the New York steel mills and her mother was a launderer,homemaker,and avocational poet.At the age of sixteen, Lucille entered colledge early,matriculating as a drama major at Howard University in Washington D.C.She later married Fred Clifton, one of her Howard associates who later edited her writngs for Random House. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.18.127.14 (talk) 06:44, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
