Info "Lucky" (help·info)

"Lucky" is the second single from pop singer Britney Spears' second album Oops!… I Did It Again. It was released during the third quarter of 2000.

The song was primarily written and produced by Max Martin and Rami, and is about an actress, who despite being very "lucky" and seemingly having it all - fame, wealth, beauty, but is truly lonely on the inside for unknown reasons ("If there's nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come at night?").

[edit] Music video

Directed by Dave Meyers in Orlando, FL, the music video for Lucky starts out with Britney as a narrator of a play showing the life of a very famous Hollywood actress named Lucky (also played by Spears). The curtains part to reveal a big billboard with Lucky on it. We see Lucky and her mansion as well. As beautiful and rich as she is, we see her about a set as she is acting looking quite distressed. Through this scene, the narrator Spears also sits above in the 'stars', throwing down glittery sparkles. Next, we find Lucky having her make-up put on and then at the Academy Awards accepting her Oscar ("Best actress, and the winner is Lucky!"). Lucky looks very, very happy as she accepts the Oscar and smiles at her fans, but it is not true happiness. As she makes her way away from her screaming fans and back into her limo, she catches a glimpse of the narrator Spears in the crowd, and also becomes distressed again. The video ends with Lucky crying herself to sleep, her make-up already stained. The curtains close, ending the video.

"Lucky" has the record for being Britney's most successful video on MTV's Total Request Live, being at #1 for 19 times until the video of Me Against The Music, that got the top for 20 times.

The music video is widely considered by many to be a manner of tribute to the life and image of singer Judy Garland. In addition, it has been found recently to be strangely and frighteningly ironic when looked at in relation to the recent turmoil in Britney's life over the past year.[1] Possibly because of this, the video has received a large increase in views on YouTube.

[edit] Parodies

  • MADtv did a Parody of the song featuring Hillary Clinton, in the parody Clinton sings of her Senate campaign. It was called "F***ing lucky".

[edit] The Single

The standard 3 track single was imported from The Netherlands and includes 3 tracks and a track which wasn't included on the original US album of Oops!… I Did It Again; a ballad called "Heart." The single also includes a remix of Lucky.

[edit] Chart performance

Though not as successful as the title-track lead single from Oops!... I Did It Again, "Lucky" still achieved success. The song peaked at number twenty- three on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to its top ten placement on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. However, like several previous singles released by Britney, "Lucky" did not have the sales of a regular CD single to aid it on the charts.

Lucky was successful at Top 40 radio, making the top of the Top 40 Tracks and Rhythmic Top 40, as well as top ten of the Mainstream Top 40.It was the second and the last single from the Oops!I Did It Again album to do so.

The single also made the top placement in many European nations, as well as Australia, where it actually ended up selling more than the previous single.

In New Zealand the single peaked at number two, despite strong sales. This is because, at the time, the singles chart was composed of 75% airplay statistics and 25% sales figure. Therefore, despite selling more than 15,000 copies (Spears' most successful single after Baby One More Time), the song only reached top-five.

Lucky sold a total of 203,000 copies in the UK earning a silver BPI award.[2] The Single sold 3.914.000 copies Worldwide in the year 2000 alone.[3]
