Lucius Cassius Longinus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There were two men of importance in Roman history with the name Lucius Cassius Longinus.
- Lucius Cassius Longinus was a Republican Consul in 107 BC.
- Lucius Cassius Longinus married Roman Emperor Caligula's sister Julia Drusilla in 33. Cassius came from an ancient and respected family. In early 37, he was appointed by Tiberius as a commissioner. When Emperor Tiberius died later that year, Caligula became Caesar. Caligula ordered Cassius to divorce Drusilla, so she could live incestuously in Rome with her brother. Caligula subsequently murdered Cassius, before his own assassination in 41, based on an oracle which Caligula interpreted as indicating that Cassius would assassinate him. Ironically, Caligula later indeed was assassinated by a Cassius: tribune Cassius Chaerea.
