Luciano Mendes de Almeida

Luciano Pedro Mendes de Almeida, S.J. (October 5, 1930–August 27, 2006) was a Brazilian Jesuit priest and Roman Catholic bishop. He was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1930.
From 1987 to 1994 Luciano Mendes de Almeida was the president of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops. Before that, he was its secretary-general from 1979 to 1987, during which time the organization had an important role in the defense of human rights and democracy.
Luciano Mendes de Almeida was the Archbishop of the historic city of Mariana from 1988 until his death in 2006 from liver cancer in São Paulo.
