Lucas Anthony Holden was a fictional character in the Australian soap opera Home and Away, first introduced in August 2005 and portrayed by Rhys Wakefield.[1] Lucas was the youngest of the Holden family. He left the Bay in February 2008.

[edit] Character

Lucas arrived in the bay during mid-2005 with his father and brother and moved in next door to the Hunters. His mother died in a hit and run accident when he was only three months old. This left him very close to both Tony and Jack. Not long after moving to the bay, the Holdens survived an attempt to be be chased out of town by an irate father whose teenage daughter Jack had killed in self-defense while he was on duty.

[edit] Storylines

Lucas soon became friends with Ric Dalby, Cassie Turner and Matilda Hunter. After auditioning for Colleen's production of "Summer Dreams of a Summer Night", Lucas landed the lead role alongside Matilda. They began to fall for each other, but whenever they went to kiss, fate intervened. After two toe-curling halves of differing styles, Matilda and Lucas finally shared their first kiss in front of all of Summer Bay.

Lucas' relationship with Matilda was unusually stable for a Home and Away pairing over the coming months, their only problems coming when they got into too much fun, trashing Jack's car in a game of Dare and then paintballing Amanda Baker, who was tearing Matilda's family apart. Somewhat oddly the pair were called upon to run Alf's campaign when he stood for mayor.

When Belle Taylor arrived in town and started dating Ric, Lucas did his best to get on well with her as Ric was his best friend, this angered Matilda who blamed Belle for splitting up Ric and Cassie. Lucas got tired of her controlling attitude and broke up with her. The break-up was made all the worse because Tony was now dating Beth Hunter, Matilda's mother, and the two families had now moved in together. Having a stepmother for the first time in his life confused Lucas and he felt that by being close to her he was being disloyal to his mother. Not for the last time, he went off the rails and briefly dated Lee Morton, a girl from school with something of a reputation. When Lee became pregnant, Lucas was believed to be the father even though they'd never slept together. He ended up supporting Lee anyway and it transpired the father was Steve Braeburn, one of their teachers.

The breakup contributed to Matilda developing bulemia as well as her insecurities over her image after the explosion at Jack and Martha's wedding. Lucas was the only one who could get through to her and helped persuade her to go into rehab. He assumed when she got out they would get back together but instead she returned with a new boyfriend, Dean Silverman. Lucas was jealous and with the help of Drew discovered that Dean was gay. This didn't help him and Matilda, however, as after one date they quickly realised they didn't have those sort of feelings for each other anymore¨and decided to stay friends. He went on to date Belle Vale, losing his virginity to her, however she was still in love with her ex-boyfriend Drew and he was heartbroken after discovering she had cheated on him with Drew.

Lucas fell in love with writing and got his ideas for his stories from either very tragic or great things that happened in Summer Bay. He became such a great writer, that he had received plenty of scholarships and visits from many universities, even some from the U.S. He then realized this was the road for him and became extremely passionate about writing. After Belle and Drew entered one of his stories in a writers competition without telling him, he was offered a place at a writers camp.

Lucas returned to the Bay some weeks later after his stepmother Beth's tragic death. During his time at writers camp, he had fallen in love with Naomi Preston, an English teacher. He had told Naomi that he was a university student and they had a short fling. When she came to Summer Bay to work as an English teacher, she assumed they could pick up from where they left off, however she was shocked and angry to find Lucas in her class. Things didn't get better when she slept with his father. This meant nothing to her or Tony, but it meant the world to Lucas. He and his dad had a big fall-out about this, but eventually made up.

After getting over Naomi, he started to have feeling for Lisa Duffy (the girl who proved that Belle still loved Drew). He started seeing her behind her (violent) boyfriend's back. She was planning on breaking up with Denni Maitland (her boyfriend). However, she didn't get a chance to do this, because she was in a car accident with Denni, after grabbing the wheel to stop him ramming Lucas and his friends. She was operated on in the city, but gave out on the table. This hit Lucas very hard. It hit him so hard that he actually tried to choke Denni, while he was in hospital. Lucas held a beautiful speech, during her memorial. It was first after her death that he realized how strong his feelings were.

Lucas developed something of a feud with Geoff Campbell after Geoff casually mentioned to Tony that Lucas and his friends had taken Tony's new boat out without permission and sunk it. Matters weren't helped when Geoff later wrongly accused Lucas of deliberately damaging a boat he had been trying to buy as a replacement. Conversely Lucas grew fond of Geoff's younger sister Annie, who Sally Fletcher had asked him to tutor. When the pair ran into trouble with their grandfather Bruce, Lucas somewhat reluctantly let Geoff stay with the family then put himself in danger by going to their farm to rescue Annie, who Bruce had locked in her room. When Bruce later died shortly after the pair had reconciled with him, Lucas was a great support to them both.

Lucas eventually left for university in February 2008. Will he ever return?
