[edit] Life and contributions
Born in Belgium, he attended Vrije Universiteit in Brussels, receiving the Licenciate in Economics in 1975, and a Graduate Certificate in Statistics, Econometrics and Operations Research in 1976. Anselin completed his education at Cornell University, where he received a PhD in Regional science in 1980.
Anselin began his academic career in 1980 at The Ohio State University, moving to University of California, Santa Barbara in 1989. He left Santa Barbara for the Regional Research Institute at West Virginia University in 1993, and then went to the University of Texas at Dallas in 1998. The following year he left for the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he served as the director of the Spatial Analysis Laboratory. In 2007 he left Urbana-Champaign for Arizona State University to become the Director and Foundation Professor of the School of Geographical Sciences, also serving as the Director of the Geoda Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation.
Anselin's contributions have been methodological, applicable to a wide variety of problems in the social sciences, and as a result he has held positions in departments of Economics, Agricultural Economics, Political Science, Urban and Regional Planning, and Geography. In 2004 he was elected a Fellow of the Regional Science Association International, in 2005 he received the Walter Isard Award, and in 2006 he was awarded the William Alonso Memorial Prize.
Anselin is best known for his 1988 book Spatial Econometrics, and his development of the applications SpaceStat and GeoDA, which contain procedures for estimating spatial autoregressive models and for spatial exploratory data analysis. GeoDA, still under active development, is freely available for download and contains some GIS capabilities.
