My name is Laura Quilter. Quilter is my name, not my occupation: by occupation and training, I'm a librarian and information law attorney (specializing in fair use, the public domain, and other limitations on copyright law and other "intellectual property", First Amendment, privacy, technology law, open access). My practice is primarily academic research and consulting, in the public interest; I rarely take on individual clients. I would never represent the RIAA in copyright matters. I have tech skills & am a proud geek, and I'm a SF fan. I'm queer, antiracist, atheist, feminist, anarchist, pacifist, and have strong political opinions -- for instance, I'm pro-science, pro-education, pro-environment, pro-life-on-earth, pro-choice, and pro-sex. I contain multitudes: I support animal rights and science. I support access to knowledge, the public domain, the freedom to tinker, the four freedoms, and freedom of thought and expression. I believe the terms "piracy" and "theft" should be reserved for maritime robberies and actions that deprive someone of their property, not for actions that pose a potential opportunity cost or royalty from a theoretical, potential sale of a copy of information. I'm also open-minded and committed to writing that is informative and honest and believe that the NPOV will help us get there. I want to hear other peoples' perspectives and I want to hear their criticisms. I believe in dialogue and communications and if you give me criticism in a helpful and friendly way I'll listen to it and try to understand it, and if I think you're right I'll change my behavior. Even if I think you're wrong I'll learn from hearing from you, perhaps enough to better explain my position. I use my real name here because I find it too difficult to maintain artificial separations, and because using my real name helps me keep me honest and accountable for all my actions. I research, read, and write for a living. Good writing in articles is important. I am opposed to spoiler warnings in encyclopedias and other reference works.
