Low Newton (HM Prison)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HM Prison Low Newton is a prison and Young Offenders Institution located at Brasside, near Durham, County Durham, England. The prison was originally constructed in 1965 as a mixed remand centre. Since 1998 HMP Low Newton has been an all-female jail taking female prisoners from across the north of England, as well as lifers and juveniles.
Following a recent Security Upgrade at HMP Low Newton in Durham, the prison now holds ‘restricted status’ (high risk) women. [1] The remaining High Security Female prisoners (restricted status) from Durham H-Wing (who were now serving on I-Wing at Durham (HM Prison) following H-Wings removal from the women's prison estate), were transferred to the HMP Low Newton 'High-Security Restricted Status Unit' following the security upgrade.
Low Newton is also home to the 'Primrose Project', designed to treat women with 'Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorders', the only women's prison with such a unit.[2]
HMP Low Newton had an Operational Capacity of 310 as of 31st January 2006
