Loveman's

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Loveman's included two separate Southeastern department store chains with the same name. One was centered in Birmingham, AL and the other in Chattanooga, TN. To distinguish the two, the one in Birmingham was known as "Loveman's of Alabama" and was the leading department store in the city with many suburban locations. Both stores had flagships in the two cities.

While Loveman's of Alabama was exclusive to Alabama, the Tennessee Loveman's chain also had a Georgia location in Dalton. The two chains were begun by different branches of the same family. The Alabama store was owned at the last by now defunct City Stores Corp and closed in 1986. The Tennessee store was bought out by Proffitt's, Inc. in 1986 and converted to Proffitt's, now Belk.
