[edit] Summary

Description

Rear of the Lovell Telescope. The underside of the surface is the underside of the original dish surface; the current surface is between 10 and 40 ft above the original, creating an internal cavern. In the center is a hinged cabin; this is kept in this orientation by, as the name suggests, a hinge, and used to hold the astronomers and their instruments (this is now done in the control building). The large "bicycle wheel" structure was added during the conversion from Mark I to Mark IA. The two towers are the "Red" and "Green" towers, named after the colours of their floors. The cabin at the bottom center holds the power supply for the telescope. The two small, green telescopes are acoustic telescopes for public demonstrations.
