Louis Joliet was a canadian explorer born in Quebec,Canada September21,1645.he was important for his discoveries in North America.Mr.Joliet and Jacques Marquette were the first two white men to map the mississippi river.louis was great in his school scholarship and was good especially in mathematics at the Jesuits' school in Quebec,he received minors orders in 1663.Louis left his studies in 1667,he became a rover wilderness and was a trader with the indians.Just a tiny fleeting glimpse he caught a searching for a copper mine on the borders of lake superior in 1669,and did it again in 1671.Louis was seen standing next to SaintLusson as he plants the arms of france at Sault Sainte Marie. In 1672,upon the advice of Jean Talon the intendant,Joliet was dispatched by Governor Frontenac to explore the grande riviere (the big river) way beyond the lakes, which the indians flowed into the southern sea.In order to the french governor refers Joliet as one "experienced these kind of discoveries of who had been near the river alraedy".In December the same year he reached the straits of Mackinac where he found with father Jacques Marquette,Mr.Joliet spent his winter in the early spring the indians were preparing map for the journey. In May the year 1673 the historic quest began.Five voyageurs and two canoes,he and Mr.Marquette found the fox river in June.A few leagues beyond, there was a short portage found in which they reached the Wisconsin River.Down the tortuous course they glided until June 17. They celebrated a little party onto the waters of the great Mississippi River. After a month they paddled southward, passing the great river from the west,of which the Indians assured them. They flowed into the Vermeille Sea (the Gulf of California) and near it was a little village whose inhabitants they were told, and they also traded with the Indians of the Pacific Coast.Louis Joliet descended the river to 30 40',christening rivers, plateaus, and elevation together with the Indians and the french names which also were destined to endure nor longer than La Salle's great dreams of the greatest "Empire Of New France." Having Mr.Joliet established beyond doubt the important fact of the great river emptied into the Gulf of Mexico. The expedition returned arriving at the Green bay in september, after having paddled 2,500 miles. Here Jacques Marquette remained, while Louis hurried to Quebec, where he arrived in the middle of August 1674.After having lost all his documents and maps also,by the upsetting of the canoe in the Lachine Rapids.Whether or not Joliet was the first frenchman to have gazed upon the Great River, the reports that he had laid before the governor and his establishment was in fact the Mississippi was a highway to the sea that led all the way to a immediate formation of plans that Louis Joliet the Canadian explorer did yaers ago.
