Talk:Louis Hjelmslev
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
To say that Hjelmslev used Saussure's definition of language as a system of signs, is not completely correct. In the Prolegomena Hjelmslev argues rather the opposite. Language should be viewed as a system of a finite number of figurae, while the purpose of language (i.e. its usage) is to be an infinite set of signs.

I went through this article and linked a number of terms, corrected other links, and overall tried to copy edit as well as de-academicise the text somewhat. I only know Hjelmslev's theories through chapter 1 of Eco's Semiotics and the Philosophy of Language, though -- that's as far as I am right now -- so forgive any factual inaccuracies I may have introduced. --Andymussell 23:06, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
- I had not looked at this for a while and it seems to have drifted a bit. Thanks for tidying it up. David91 02:24, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
