In 1915, the University Laboratory School was founded as the Demonstration High School on the campus of Louisiana State University. The purpose of the high school was to provide teachers and pre-service teaching candidates with an opportunity to educate students. In 1953, the Lab School was relocated to its current location as a stand alone building on Dalrymple Drive. Although the school opened with only 100 students in the grades 8-11, by 1936 it educated grades 1-11, by 1945 1-12, and by 1981 K-12. The gymnasium and auditorium at the Lab School were constructed in 1964. After the destruction of the elementary school building in the fall of 1979, a new K-5 building was added in 1981, followed by the subsequent construction of new wings for the elementary and middle schools in 2004 and 2006. The original high school building underwent a massive renovation in 2005, allowing for the expansion of the high school classes to total around 400 students. In the 2006-2007 school year the gym caught fire, and later investigation would reveal that it was due to arson. There are currently no suspects. Reconstruction of the gym started the following summer and is still in progress. The completion date is set for sometime during the 2008-2009 school year. In addition to the gym being rebuilt, the school auditorium went under massive renovation. This gave the students a brand new and updated auditorium before the end of the 2007-2008 year.
As the first International Baccalaureate school in the state of Louisiana, the University Laboratory School is currently expanding from solely offering the high school curriculum to providing the Primary Years Program and Middle Years Program as well. Additionally, most instructors at the school have earned a master's degree and/or a doctorate, and several are National Board certified.
[edit] School uniforms
Students are required to wear school uniforms [2]. These uniforms consist of a polo shirt embossed with the school logo for all students, skorts or skirts of an appropriate length in the school plaid, and shorts or pants of any type (again in the appropriate length). Skirts do not necessarily need to be of the school plaid either. The uniform was actually voted in by the student body to ease the stress of choosing outfits in the morning and as a safety precaution.
