From the southwest, LA 653 begins at an intersection with LA 182. It heads east and then turns north. It crosses US 90 (future Interstate 49) via an overpass (but with no access). It ends at another junction with LA 182.
LA 653 is an undivided, two-lane highway for its entire length.
