Louisiana is a city in Pike County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,863 at the 2000 census. Louisiana is located in northeast Missouri, on the Mississippi River south of Hannibal.
An ammonia plant here was converted to study and produce synthetic fuels. Louisiana is home to the Louisiana Winter River Fest.

[edit] Origin of Name
The area was settled in 1816, incorporated in 1818, and is the oldest town in Pike County . The town is named after Louisiana Basye, who was so named because she was the first child born in St. Louis, Missouri, after the Louisiana Purchase in 1804. Her family moved to Pike County in 1818 when she was 14 years old. The town may have been originally called Louisianaville.

(39.445833, -91.056584)According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.9 km²), of which, 3.1 square miles (8.1 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (8.48%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,863 people, 1,590 households, and 1,006 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,234.4 people per square mile (476.5/km²). There were 1,843 housing units at an average density of 588.9/sq mi (227.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.27% White, 5.72% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 2.20% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.93% of the population.
There were 1,590 households out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.5% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,467, and the median income for a family was $37,939. Males had a median income of $28,750 versus $19,167 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,623. About 15.6% of families and 20.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.7% of those under age 18 and 11.3% of those age 65 or over.
