Garrel is famous for his starring role in The Dreamers, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, and for regularly appearing in films by French director Christophe Honoré, including Ma mère, Dans Paris and Les Chansons d'amour.

According to an interview with Michael Pitt in the New York Daily News, Garrel, just before the shooting the first nude scene in The Dreamers, ran nude through every room on the set screaming. The prank broke the tension and "loosened everybody up."

Garrel speaks French, English, and Italian fluently.
